Charity accounting comes with responsibilities to trustees, regulators and the people the organisation exists to support.
We provide practical accounting support for charities, including accounts preparation and independent examinations where appropriate.
Charity accounts
The accounts a charity needs depend on its legal structure, income, governing document and applicable reporting requirements. We'll establish what is required before agreeing the work.
Where engaged to do so, we can prepare the charity's accounts from the records supplied and explain the figures to the trustees.
Different charity structures
We support CIOs, charitable companies, trusts and unincorporated charities or associations where their requirements fall within our service scope. The reporting needs to reflect the particular charity, rather than treating all structures as the same.
Independent examination
Independent examinations
Independent examination is different from statutory audit. Baldwin's Accountancy Services undertakes independent examinations where the charity falls within the relevant examination regime. We do not provide statutory audits.
We will check the requirements and the examiner's independence before accepting the work. Accounts preparation and examination are distinct roles, and trustees retain responsibility for the accounts.

Bookkeeping and funds
Clear records throughout the year make it easier to prepare accounts and answer trustees' questions. Where restricted or designated funds are involved, the records should distinguish them appropriately and retain the information needed to account for their use.
We can agree bookkeeping responsibilities with you so the information needed for the year-end is maintained as the charity operates.

Trustees need understandable accounts
Trustees should be able to understand the financial information they are approving. We can explain the accounts and discuss queries, rather than simply passing over a document to sign.
The trustees' responsibilities remain with them. Our role is to support the agreed accounting work and make the financial information easier to understand.
